Golden Week 2012- Hamamatsu Matsuri 浜松祭り Part 2

5th May 2012 こどもの日

After a feast of kites flying under the hot sun, we went to the museum. It was just next to the venue for kite-fighting competition.

Once entered the building, we could see lots of kites in different shapes and colours. A volunteer uncle kindly walked us all over the building and explained all the details related to Hamamatsu Matsuri.

colourful kites!
For the strings used for kite flying, they are still using the traditional hemp, not the polyester type. According to the explanation, it was used because when the strings from 2 kites inter-wined up in the sky, the kite fliers will try to cut off their opponents strings by friction. Using polyester made strings will not be able to produce the results.

The festival dates back years ago, and all the town 町 have their own machi crest or emblem. Some were just plain words, some were beautiful pictorials depicting animals, ghosts, etc. It was very interesting!

After the kites, another important activity for the Hamamatsu Matsuri is the parade of floats. The floats were very spectacular to look at. It was not cheap to build this float, according to the uncle, one of the float cost 60 million yen. Ah, I didn't have time to join the night parade, what a waste!

After the tour around the museum, I bought a t-shirt with the town emblems as souvenir. We left just in time to catch the bus to back Hamamatsu Station and took train to Inuyma 犬山 to visit Meiji Mura 明治村.

#Nakatajima Sand Dunes 中田島砂丘

The museum was next to the sand dunes and it was the venue for the Hamamatsu Matsuri. I think that it is almost the same with the sand dunes in Tottori 鳥取. Not really a fan of beach.
