Souvenirs from Japan 4

I tried many more food items from Japan. Below are some of it.

One of the famous brands one can get in Japanese Airport is Royce. It's one of the chocolate brands that I like very much. I like their Nama Chocolate, however it needed to be stored in a specific temperature of 10 degree Celsius or below. So it's not easy to get the Nama Chocolate. The one I got as a souvenir was not the type that needed to be refrigerated. Of the three flavours below, I like the Maccha the most and fruit flavour the least.

The second one was the Ukai crackers 鵜飼せんべい from Nagara River 長良川, Gifu 岐阜. From the website, it claims that it is made from the eggs laid by the local chicken and flour from the Gifu prefecture. Truth to be told, this senbei is very hard, not for someone with weak teeth. Anyway, if one have the chance to visit Gifu, he or she could arrange to visit the cormorant fishing on the Nagara River. From what I read, it sounds very interesting.

Next was Hakata Torimon from Hakata, Fukuoka. It's a kind of manju with white bean paste. Well, it tastes like mooncake with lotus bean paste. From the company website (明月堂), one can find many types of sweets made of yam, white bean paste, red bean paste, etc. One can get this from Rakuten too.

The following were all souvenirs from Tokyo. First on the list was Tokyo Saku Saku Pie (東京さくさくパイ), it is not recommended for people with diabetes though, it's covered with sugar. For this Saku Saku Pie, it comes with two flavour, chocolate and caramel, Yummy!

Next was cookies from Tokyo Milk Cheese Factory. Normally people will buy the Honey & Gorgonzola Cookies or Salt & Camembert Cookies. The taste is not bad, however, alcohol is used for the products, so, definitely not Halal. Anyway, cheese products from Japan is really delicious. I still misses the cheese cake from Japan.

Coming up next was another manju. It's from Shinjuku Nakamuraya, It's categorized under western style Japanese sweets. Well, I am not sure how it fits into the western style, but it's quite delicious and the paste is not so sweet, just nice.

After that, it's senbei (せんべい), a kind of rice crackers from Tsutsujiya つつじや, it's called Delicious senbei 美味燦然おせんべい. Hahaha, good naming. For this series, the maker boasts that it's made of healthy ingredients, like seaweed, burdock root, sesame and shrimp, but the rice still remain the main ingredient.

Finally, crackers from Ginza Akebono. In one packet, there will be 17 types of biscuits, one can try many flavours from just one packet, not bad! The one I got was crackers with cheese (the one with yellow cheese at the center), kelp flavoured crackers (with desiccants), and soy sauce flavoured crackers. The most delicious one was the kelp crackers, but I wondered why only the kelp had desiccants inside and not the others. Maybe dryness is very important for this kelp crackers. For this Ginza Akebono crackers, it is also a feast for the eyes, it's very beautiful.

Due to the culture of omiyage, I have had many Japanese food brought by the Japanese colleagues, mostly the chocolate or crackers, I think food is better than key chain as souvenirs, don't you think so? It's easy to clear off and will not clogged the storage at the office table or home storage. Hahaha!

  1. The way you described Hakata Torimon makes more sense, it does taste like mooncake indeed! Reading that it said white bean paste wasn’t enough to convince me of what it was called.
