I watched a Korean movie late at night yesterday, it was scheduled to be shown on TV at 12 o'clock midnight and initially I was going to give up because I was very sleepy, then before I switched off the TV, I became energized after watching the last few minutes of funny ghost show "Sini ada hantu". Since the sleepiness faded, I watched the "Pacemaker", a Korean movie about a marathon runner.
Like any other sports movies, "Pacemaker" is a very inspirational movie. The protagonist Man Ho was a professional marathon runner that suffered a leg injury and became a delivery guy for a fried chicken shop. Then, Man Ho former coach came back to ask him to go back to the national team to be a pacemaker for a promising marathon runner. Since Man Ho couldn't let go his love for running, he agreed to that. However, initially his coach didn't tell him that his leg injuries were so bad that after the competition, there was high possibility that he couldn't run anymore. When Man Ho knew about that, he left to pursue his dream of actually complete a marathon race to end his career, not as a pacemaker. However, due to some circumstances, he went back to the national team to join the Olympic game as a pacemaker for his teammate. During the game, his estranged brother came to see him and this motivated him, he actually finished the full marathon.
The flow and storyline of "Pacemaker" is quite smooth, so even though it's quite late at night, I was able to finish the movie. Lately, I watched a lot of Korean movies. A few of them were about sports. Other than "Pacemaker", there were "As One" and "Champ".
I actually cried when I watched "As One", it was about a unified Korean table tennis team that the World Table Tennis championship in 1991. This story talked about how the table tennis team from North and South Korea worked together to win the championship. Initially, both teams had some misunderstandings over many things, but over the time, they trained together and had better understandings on each other. The most exiting part was the final game. Wow, it's much more exiting than actual game because the pace was very fast.
I couldn't bring myself to watch games actually, if the game (any games) was tame, I would feel bored; if the game was very stiff, I would feel overwhelmed. So, for the world cup that just finished recently, I didn't even watch one game.
The first movie is about marathon, second is about table tennis. For the third one, it's "Champ", about race horse and the jockey. It's about a almost blink jockey who lost his wife in an accident. After that, he couldn't continue his career and accumulated a huge amount of debt. While in exile, he found a limping horse with much potential, so he made his comeback with the horse. However, his eyesight soon failed him and he was not allowed to join the racing, however the horse didn't allow anyone except the said jockey to ride it. The final part was a very tearful scene where the jockey continued the race with the horse. Well, although this story was just a story, the horse was actually based on a true story of a racehorse in Korea, named Luna. (source)
All these three movies were very motivational and tearjerkers. Wow! When watching most of these sports movie, have to prepare a handkerchief to wipe the tears.
*a Bollywood sport movie is very nice too, it's Chakde! India by Shah Rukh Khan
