Fireworks show viewing in Arao (荒尾) - Greenland Theme Park

17th July 2011

Summer is the time for Hanabi shows (花火大会) in Japan. The union in my company offered a 200 yen coupon to enter a theme park to watch fireworks show. So, me and my colleague just grabbed a ticket. However, the show started on 8.30 pm, a bit late. Since the place was quite near with Yanagawa, where it is famous with Unagi rice, we decided to have lunch there before going to see the fireworks..

So, we took a train from Kumamoto station to Omuta, then took a Nishitetsu (西鉄) train to Yanagawa to have Unagi. Since the most famous shop is not near the train station, we decided to compromise a little and went to a shop near the station. It was not bad, however, still not as good as the one I had before.

After having a really fulfilling lunch, we proceed to Omuta, and waited for bus to take us to the Green land theme park. We went inside, however, since the ticket was only for entrance, we were not allowed to play the theme park's game. So, we just walked around the park. People started to camp on the field before 4pm under the hot sun. There was a free show on something like "masked rider" or "power rangers". So, we went to watch  the show before dinner. A very noisy show, the kids were very excited, and calling the 'heroes' name everytime the rangers came out. It was very funny to watch the show. After the show, the kids with their parents formed a long queue until outside the stadium to take photos with the man in costume.

Next, we had our dinner inside the theme park and proceeded to the field to watch the fireworks. It was full of people already. However, we chose a wrong spot, a building blocked the full view of the fireworkds. So, we went to the other side to watch it. It was a spectacular 30 minutes fireworks show. However, after 20 minutes, my eyes became blurry. Still, it's a very fascinating show. Right after the show ended on 9pm, we rushed to the main gate to take the bus to train station, it was packed with people, and it was summer, all of us were covered in sweat, so it smelled awful inside the bus, the worse thing was the road to the train station was jammed, we had to endure the situation for around one hour. After reaching the station, we took the train bound for Yatsushiro (八代) to go back to Kumamoto. A very tiring day!
ah, chose the wrong spot initially and the view was blocked
