Stardust

Another novel by Neil Gaiman. Hehe!
Stardust
Just finished the novel today while walking home, I wanted to know the ending. This story was quite of sweet and sad.

The story start with a wall, one side was faire land and another was the village. A market or fair will be held once every 8 years at the wall. People from the faire land will cross over to be at the market. This was the place where Dunstan Thorn met a girl with pointed ears and violet eyes who man a glass flowers store. After Dunstan encounter with the girl, he married a fellow villager. Before his daughter was born, his child with the violet eyed girl was sent to him through the wall, named Tristran Thorn. So, the boy grew up.

Tristran Thorn fall madly in love with the most beautiful girl in town, Victoria Forester. To get Victoria's "anything you desire," Tristran  decided to get over the wall to find the fallen star they watched as it falls from the sky. The star was actually hit by an amulet thrown by the 81st Lord Stormhold before he was taken by death. The Lord said any of his living sons who got to the amulet first will going to become the 82nd Lord of Stormhold. This was actually the interesting part, the lord actually hoped that by the end of his time, only one son would remain, the way he had attained his own title. Well, at least the lord was more realistic compared to the Chinese emperors of the pass who hoped that their children would remain their brotherly love when there was only one and only crown. On another side of the forest, there were 3 witches who were so old that no one knew their age. They saw the falling star too. After some negotiations, the eldest witch went out to find for the falling star. Star's heart can extend their lives. On her way, the witch met with the violet eyed girl's master, Madame Semele. The violet eyed girl was changed into a bird for punishment. The elderly witch cursed the  Madame Semele that she won't be able to see the star even if the star is in front of her.

So, telling his parents about his plan, his father gave him a glass flower (given by the violet eyes girl) and helped him to cross over the wall with some food. Tristran met with a little man, they had some adventure together, and the little man teaches him one thing or two about the faerie land. The little man gave him a candle that enabled him to travel far enough to find the star with some spell. However, it was enough to bring him back to the wall. So, Tristran travelled with the star (who is actually a girl, the moon's daughter named Yvaine), he chained her. On the way, he saved a unicorn and it became their mode of transportation. When Tristran tried to find food for them and unchained the star. The star and the unicorn left.

When Tristran came back with food, he found out the star was gone. He couldn't catch up because the unicorn was fast. However, a tree spirit helped him and he managed to get a lift from Primus, 81st Lord Stormhold's son. The elderly witch made a trap to lure the star and the unicorn. However, her plan to take the star heart was distracted by Tristran and Primus. Primus was killed. Tristran and the star managed to get away with the tree spirit help. After that, Tristran explained to the star, Yvaine that he had promised Victoria that he would bring her the fallen star. Reluctantly, the star was bound to travel with Tristran now that he had saved her life. They hitched a ride with a ship and then with the Madame Semele. When the witch saw the glass flower that Tristran owned, she agreed to provide ride and food as long as she got the flower back. Tristran agreed to that. However, Madame Semele can't see the star.

Primus brother, Septimus was bound by blood rule to revenge his brother death. He found the elderly witch, trying to kill her, but got himself killed. So, all the sons of 81st Lord Stormhold died. The elderly witch waited for them on the way to the wall, but due to the curse she earlier placed on Madame Semele, she missed the star. So, Tristran and the star reached the wall, however, the people who guard the wall refused to let Tristran pass for they did not believe it was him. So, the star was actually saved, if she had crossed over, she would be a cold, dead metal. Then, Tristran sister came to the wall to find him and let him to Victoria, only now he realised that he doesn't love Victoria anymore, he love Yvaine. He gave his blessing for Victoria to marry Mr. Mondays and went back to his parents to ask about his real identity. His father told him everything, so he decided to stay at the faerie land with Yvaine after bidding farewell with all his family members. The witch found the star, but found out that she don't have her heart anymore, the star admitted that she gave hers to Tristran. The witch left.

On the other hand, the violet eyed girl, who was actually Lady Una, the daughter of 81st Lord stormhold was freed from Madame Semele's curse when the moon lost her daughter and if it occurred in a week when two Mondays came together. The two Mondays were Mr. Mondays and Victoria. Lady Una threatened Madame Semele to pay her or she would hunt her down. With a glass flower as payment, Lady Una found her son, Tristran and asked him to ask for Yvaine's amulet. So, Tristran became the 82nd Lord of Stormhold because he was the last surviving male heir and he got the amulet. Lady Una ruled Stormhold as regent before his son and daughter in law travelled the faire land. She ruled well, and after Tristran was installed as the lord, he made wise decisions, led his people to victory in war and forged a lasting peace with a tribe. He was happy with his wife, the Lady Yvaine.

However, it was not happily ever after, he grew old and death took him away. Yvaine became the Lady of Stormhold. Every night, if the duties of state permits, she would climb to the highest peak of the palace and stares into the dark sky and watches with sad eyes. It was so sad, her family were up on the sky, her loved one was not alive anymore, and she couldn't get back to the sky. If she haven't fall into love, she wouldn't be so lonely. felt emotional down after reading this ending.
