As of 2011, her novels had spent a combined 861 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List, including 176 weeks in the number-one spot. Over 400 million copies of her books are in print, including 12 million copies sold in 2005 alone." What an impressive number, her stories must be very good.
So when I came across this book, I bought it, it has been awhile since I last read a romance novel. I couldn't stop reading once I started. The stories were engaging and make you want more. I like both of the stories.
The Reef
This story talked about treasure hunting from sunken ships. A boy, Matthew witnessed the death of his father, murdered by the person, VanDyke who engaged their service to find sunken ship. After that, he and his uncle, Buck continued to explore the sea for the ships. Matthew met another family who do excavation as hobby, he fall in love with the daughter, Tate. Soon, they made a huge discovery, however, when they sent Buck to hospital, VanDyke took over the excavation site and bribed the officials to make the excavation site his. This broke Matthew and Tate and their families heart. Later, for Buck medical concerns, Matthew went back to America and took up a job he doesn't like to pay for his uncle operation and medical expenses. While Tate went back to college and finished her education. Years pass, Tate's father, Ray found out some information about an amulet that Matthew's father and VanDyke tried to find years back. He called Matthew and Tate back, and they set up to find another sunken ship. This time, VanDyke got wind of this from a spy he planted with Matthew, LaRue. However, he didn't know that LaRue told all about the spy thing to Matthew and they just played along to fool VanDyke. They found the ship, strike gold for a second time. Matthew and Tate becoming a couple finally. However, VanDyke kidnapped Tate to force Matthew to give out the amulet from the sunken ship. Like all good stories, they finally outwitted VanDyke and save Tate. Not to forget, VanDyke became crazy and was sent to jail. Happy ending!
"from this story, there were a lot of technical terms for the sea digging, excavation, etc. Others were you love me, you love me not situation, typical romance story. From the story, the founder kept all the treasures. From the Malaysia and Indonesia (strait of Malacca) cases, the government didn't get much, maybe due to corruption or inexperienced excavation team, it was kind of sad when seeing all the valuable stuff got lost to the collectors from foreign countries instead of the Museum, it was a piece of history!"
Midnight Bayou
About a lawyer, Declan who bought a run down mansion in New Orleans. There he met the girl of his dream, Lena. However, there was some issues with the mansion. Years back, a servant girl, Abby was married into the Manet family, but she went missing when her husband, Lucian was out for business trip, the matriarch of the family, Josephine claimed that she ran away with her lover, the truth was Lucian's brother, Julian raped and killed her, to cover it up, Josephine and Julian buried her body with some of her belongings. Then, Lucian killed himself half believing the story his mother made up. After Lucian death, Lucian and Abby daughter, Marie Rose was write off the will by Josephine and was sent to live with her maternal grandparents. After that, the Manet family started to go downhill and the mansion changes hand for a few times. Lena was a direct descendant from Marie Rose.
Declan kept having dreams and even dreamwalking in that mansion he was working on. He also pursued Lena. However, Lena was abandoned by her mother was she was a baby and she had trust issue. As the story unveiled, Declan and Lena knew more about the story of Lucian and Abby. The weird thing was Declan was dreaming as Abby, feeling as what she felt. So, he thought that he was the Lucian's rebirth while Lena was Abby's. However, Lena pointed out that he was Abby in the pass life, while she was Lucian. This was funny! From Declan's dreams, finally he knew all about the story, he blamed Lena (Lucian) for killing himself and let their daughter, without a parent. But Lena said that Lucian was raised weak and Abby was always the strong one in the relationship. This time around, the situation was different, they could make it work. And so, the love one became a couple.
"This story talked about pass and present lives, interesting, we seldom got english version of it. The most funny about this was the woman became a man, and the man became a woman, chance of sex. There was a comment last time I read from internet, what if a pair of lovers, in their second life, born into the same sex? Then, it would be awkward. And what if their age gap was so big? So, it was better to love truly and affectionately for this life, rather than hoping for the second, third or ......."
