Galactic North by Alastair Reynolds

This book has some trekkie feeling to it. The book cover was glittering, the colour changes from different angle of viewing, very futuristic like.

I did not bought this book, it was given to me by my brother. My guess was he was attracted by the cover and bought it. Well, who wouldn't anyway. It was a collection of short stories about future where different kind of human species exist together, Conjoiners, Demarchy, Ultra, etc.

I think the story 'Nightingale' was the best, it was about a medical ship which was built by a group of anti-war rich men to treat soldiers wounded in the battle from both sides, however, the ship was a intelligent creature that could think for herself. She was sad that after the wounded was nursed back to health, they were sent back to the war. So, with her artificial intelligence, she cut off all communications with the ground, however, when a rescue team was sent, she faked her own death with a explosion. All the patients and medical persons were killed. Then, a group of people wanted to find the culprit of the war, a colonel. The information they got was the colonel was in the ship, so they decided to break into the ship and bring out the colonel to justice. In their opinion, it was the colonel who faked the explosions of the ship to cover up his hide out. So, the group of people broke into the ship and finally met with the soul of the ship, Nightingale and the colonel. The Nightingale found out the truth about the colonel and she made him suffered with all the alterations to his body. Plus, to give human beings an alarm or warning, she joined up all the crew (who wanted to capture the colonel), literally joined all of them into a one big being with all of them still conscious, then she sent them back to the ground. So, the group live as one as long as all of them live, if one of them is dead, then all die. The group spent their time to spread the anti-war message and hoping that one day, the ship will come back and separate them into their individual own self.

Others like the 'Galactic north', 'Weather', 'Glacial', 'Great wall of Mars', 'A spy in Europe' and 'Grafenwalder's Bestiary' are very good too. I like 'Weather' too, very heart warming, a love story between a human and a conjoiner. The stories all ended quite sad, so after reading, felling not so positive and sad and worry about the future!
