匣の中の失楽(a novel by Takemoto Kenji 竹本健治)

I found this novel in a book fair. I was quite piss with that so called 'international Chinese book fair" which claimed to offer a variety of books, and blah blah blah. Most of the books were about finance, self-help, classics and many translated book in Chinese. The choices were not much, and it really did not ignite my interest to buy. Even the collections on Romance were bad. I really regretted that I took 2 hours bus ride and then took LRT to KLCC for this. Wasting my time and money. So, to feel that I achieved something, I brought this Japanese Detective Novel by Takemoto Kenji. It was translated into Chinese by one Lim Min Sheng 林敏生. Quite expensive compared to the books I brought normally, it costs me around RM40.

After that, this book remained in my possession for quite some time until I ran out of book to read on the way to work inside the train. So, I started to read this.

It was divided into 5 chapters. When I started to read, it was quite dry. However, after kept reading, I was fascinated by the story. This book surrounded a group of friends, all youth who were very interested in detective and investigation work. In the Chapter 1, one of the character, 'A' announced to his friends that he would write a detective novel that inter-wined with real life, involves all of them and a murder inside a locked room. Then, one of the character, 'B' was found dead in 'C' home. After that, the group of friends decided to find out who was the killer because they believed that it was committed by one of them. So, they investigated the murder and told of their findings.

In Chapter 2, 'B' (who was murdered in Chapter 1) read the story and analysed how he was killed. From there, we knew that Chapter 1 was actually novel, written by 'A'. However, in this chapter, another person, 'D' was missing from a room, left nothing but a spot of blood. From here, it became weirder. So, the group start to investigate the 'D''s disappearance.

By Chapter 3, all of them were discussing the 'A''s novel. The storyline was almost the same with Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. However, in the middle of discussion, the room they were in suddenly suffered a blackout. And tragically, the twin brother of 'A' was killed.

After reading all this 3 chapters, I felt like 'what kind of novel is this'! However, I continued. In Chapter 4, 'D' was still nowhere to be found. And the group was discussing the murder again and provided all sorts of ideas. At the end of this chapter, 'C' was found dead inside a locked room too.

I really hoped that Chapter 5 would tell us that all the murders was just a novel, a story inside a story. However, from here, 'C' was not dead yet. When 'A' was discussing with the group, 'C' was killed in this chapter inside a room locked from inside. After that, they started to get the idea who actually committed all the murders. 'C' thought that 'A''s twin brother killed 'B'. So, 'C' killed brother of 'A' for revenge. However, this was found out by 'E', so 'E' killed 'C'. Later, 'E' committed suicide. This story ending was very sad.

However, the author added another twist and a small chapter after Chapter 5, by this time, they already knew that actually 'B' was having psychological problems, 'B' hypnotised 'C' and brother of 'A' to be near him when he committed suicide. So, 'C' suspected brother of  'A' and killed him although in his heart, he knew that 'B' was actually not murdered. 'C' needed to blame someone. After that, 'E' found out what 'C' did, and he thought that 'C' killed all the people, so 'E' killed 'C'. It was such a unfortunate event to lead to all those murders.

And at the end, they thought that 'D' was having hallucinations always because she was being used by 'B' for practice in hypnotise. However, everybody was happy when they read a poem by her that was published in a magazine later although she was still nowhere to be found. At least, 'D' was safe.

This was the first time I read so many story inside a story in a book. It was very interesting, but I would never choose a book from this author again! Keep bluffing, and I had to keep guessing whether the chapter was real event or fake event in the story or not, so tired!
