Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett

Another book from Terry Pratchett.

This book covers the origin of Carrot joining the night watch and how Captain Vimes met his future wife, Lady Sybil, so interesting! In this book, Lupine Wonse (the secretary of the Patrician) summoned out a noble dragon using a book stolen from the Unseen University. Since it's a noble dragon, the people of Ankh-Morpork would have to make it into a king. In his plan, a man (arranged by Lupine Wonse himself) would kill the dragon and claim the throne, and Lupine Wonse would become the advisor to the new king and controlled everything from the back.

However, the plan backfired. The man who was supposed to kill the dragon was killed instead by the dragon and the dragon couldn't be summoned away. So, the night watch actually planned to assassinate the dragon. They failed miserably but all survived nonetheless. At the end, it was the swamp dragon, Errol that succeeded in making the noble dragon gone. Hahahah! The noble dragon was a 'she' and Errol was smitten by the noble dragon. In the story, Lady Sybil was so worried about this Errol, he was not so healthy and she paid special attention to him. After that, Lady Sybil gave Errol to Captain Vimes. In the watch building, Errol ate everything he could find, including a kettle that Colon requested as part of the gifts for the heroic endeavours at the end of the book. Who knows, right? Errol (a small swamp dragon) liked a noble dragon (way bigger than the swamp dragon) and successfully courted the King, oh no, the Queen. I really didn't see it coming. I wish them happy forever in wherever place they are in.

Carrot was a really interesting character in Discworld. He was an orphan raised by dwarf and was a law abiding , by the book kind of honest human being. We need more people like him in this world. I still feel funny when I think back one  of the scenes in the book where Carrot tried to arrest the dragon. That was kind of brave and Carrot still have the innocence of a child. Hahaha!

And because of this dragon thingy, Captain Vimes met Lady Sybil. When the dragon was first spotted, Captain Vimes needed to find someone who knew a thing or two about the dragons, and the name of Lady Sybil popped up. So, Captain Vimes went to find Lady Sybil. Their first conversion was epic! Lady Sybil first sentence to Captain Vimes was "Ah, good man. Do you know anything about mating?" Hahaha, Lady Sybil tried to breed her swamp dragon and Captain Vimes misunderstood her initially. I though they started dating in this book, but until the end, they were not a couple yet.

There are many LOL moments in this book. When Carrot was still very new in the Watch, he arrested the President of the Guild of Thieves. So, the President was very angry and protested to the Patrician, when the Patrician asked "No unlicensed thieving, surely?" The President of the Guild of Thieves left to investigate. Oh my god, licensed thieving! The Patrician (Lord Vetinari) loved structure and plans. since crimes would never stop, the Patrician thought that it should be "organized crime". So, he legalized the Guild of Thieves and others. And it pleased everyone, including the rich that could afford the "reasonable" premiums charged by the Guild of Thieves for uninterrupted life. It was so funny!

Of course there are many other funny moments, so far all the disc-world series I read were very eye opening for me, no dull moments at all. Happy reading!
