Eric by Terry Pratchett

Today is a public holiday and my wish to sleep late was squashed by a phone call from the company at 6.30 a.m. After I woke up, I had trouble to go back to sleep and it was too early to do anything. So, I read. I chose a book by Terry Pratchett that I bought from The Big Bad Wolf sales last year.

Well, this's my first Terry Pratchett and I love this book! It's very funny, plus the font is big and not long winded, I finished this up in 3 hours, had breakfast in the middle ♥.

The story is about a boy, Eric (a demonologist) who wanted to summon a demon to fulfil his three wishes, to rule the world, to meet the most beautiful woman ever lived and to live forever. Instead of a demon, he summoned a wizard instead and not just any wizard, but the most incompetent wizard in the universe (the words used in the back cover of the book)! Well, this is my first discworld novel, so I am not so familiar with the settings and characters in the book, I enjoyed it and I am thinking to find other discworld novels.

Back to the story, although the wizard (Rincewind) was not really a demon, somehow when he snapped his finger, he was able to bring Eric to Klatch, where the inhabitants paid tribute to Eric as the ruler of the world and offered jewellery and food to them. Rincewind wandered off and met a prisoner, da Quirm. da Quirm showed Rincewind what the people of Klatch planned to the ruler of the world. The inhabitants there blamed the ruler of the world for all their misfortunes and wanted to sacrifice them. They were caught and ready to be sacrificed when Rincewind's luggage appeared and saved them. One of the most interesting sentences in this part is "the prayers of most religions generally praise and think the gods involved, either out of general piety or in the hope that he or she will the hint and start acting responsibly".

Rincewind was very good at running away, after they escaped, they ended up in large wooden horse. A large wooden horse, one directly remembered Helen of Troy. Hahaha! They were going to meet with the face that launched a thousand ships. Instead of a charming lady, they met a not so thin mother with several children. Due to the prolong war, the lady married and had children. Hahaha! Eric was very upset and Rincewind explained that one needs a reason to justified a war. Sad!

Then, Rinsewind snapped his fingers and they went to the beginning of the universe. Literally, to live forever. Rinsewind and Eric left again and ended up in hell. Then the book revealed that Rinsewind was actually not the one who made things happen, it was all the work of a demon, Vassenego to bring down the Demon King, King Astfgl who loved documentation and who was annoyed with Rinsewind. Somehow, Vassenego managed to trick King Astfgl to accept the post of Supreme Life President of Hell. That was brilliant!

At the end, Vassenego decided to let them go because the demon needed someone to spread stories about hell and Rincewind and Eric left the hell and went home. Ahhh, nice story!

Another funny sentences from the book, "the gods of discworld have never bothered much about the judging the souls of the dead, and so people only go to hell if that's where they believe, in their deepest heart, that they deserve to go. Which they won't do if they don't know about it. This explains why it is important to shoot missionaires on sight." LOL!
