Summer holiday in Onomichi 尾道 (day 9 - 21st August 2011)

Last day of the trip.

From Matsuyama, we went to Onomichi 尾道. First, our planner planned to take bicycle and cycle from Shikoku 四国 to Honshu 本州 via Shimanami Kaido しまなみ海道 that span across a few small islands. Along the way, there were many natural attractions. However, most of us were lazy, so we opposed that idea. So, we just sit comfortably in the car and travel to Onomichi.

It was a rainy day. So, when we reach Senkoji Temple 千光寺, one of our travel mate decided not to walk in this kind of weather. She just found a cafe and read her IPAD while we toured the temple with umbrellas and got our shoes and pants wet. According to the Onomichi city guide, Senkoji temple was built on the first year of the reign of Emperor Daido in 806. And according to the legend, years before, there were 19 Buddhist temple on the area, however, wars brought destruction and a lot was destroyed. There were a lot of Buddhist statues on that area. However, the appearances of the statues were quite different from the one I saw in Malaysia. To reach there, one can take ropeway after dropped of at Nagaeguchi bus stop. However, our car GPS system already brought us quite near the temple, so we just walked up there. Since the weather was really not conductive, we decided to have our lunch instead of continue to tour the whole place.

Kyoonro - the bell was rang  just before midnight on new year eve
First, we planned to eat Onomichi Ramen at Ichibankan 壹番館 (a famous ramen shop). However, after we saw the long queue that extended to around 5 meters long. We gave up and went to another ramen shop that served Onomichi ramen. Onomichi Ramen was a pork soup noodle with big slices of pork with the fat still on. I like meat, but I did not like the fat, so I just finished the ramen and left the pork alone. There were some spices that were added into the soup, I must said it was acquired taste.

After lunch, we had nothing to do anymore and the rain was non-stop. Since the day was still young and our travel mates from tokyo will take night bus in Fukuyama 福山 on 7pm. We decided to go to Fukuyama. From the GPS recommendation, we went to a Toy museum in Fukuyama. However, the entrance ticket was around 1000 yen. So, we did not enter and just went to the souvenir shop. Here, we found a brochure introducing a place for Onsen (Shinshoji Onsen神勝寺温泉). Since it was rainy, we agreed to go onsen!

It was a very big onsen building with a lot of customers. They had outdoor onsen pool too. There were a lot of pools. However, the one so unforgettable was the outdoor pool. The weather was cool and the water was so hot, I think it was more than 40 degrees celcius. I almost drown after stayed too long in the water because the legs were weak, lucky my friend was there to pull me.

Tomato Bank (saw this on the way to Fukuyama Station , Japan have a lot of local banks, so interesting)
We stayed in the onsen building for 4 hours like that. After that, we sent those who will back Tokyo to the Fukuyama train station. While the rest of us, drove to Hiroshima City to return the car. After that, we had Okonomiyaki お好み焼き in Hiroshima train station as dinner. Then, we all took Shinkansen to back. End of the trip!
